Songs 101
Don Dixon
PO Box 8744
Canton, OH 44711
Don Dixon does more than just rock. His songs are like great short stories. A subversive sense of humor, with unexpected shafts of light illuminating the ever encroaching darkness - somewhere Raymond Carver is smiling down.
-- Todd Graff – writer, director, actor
From the aching of “Cliché” to the trenchancy of 'Kitchen' and rocking-out desire of “I Can Hear the River,” Don Dixon's deep heart and electric wit shine through and thrill. A songwriter's songwriter!
-- Bland Simpson – composer, author, performer
Don Dixon is such a moving singer, deft producer and inventive player, that it's been easy to overlook his way with words. His lyrics are clever -- so clever, in fact, that the deep emotions underlying the smart turns of phrase often don't register their impact until a second or third listen. This book is helpful in that regard -- a series of revelations even for those fans who thought Dixon's many gifts had already been fully revealed.
-- Anthony DeCurtis - Contributing Editor, Rolling Stone
Like Annette Bening's portrayal of Carolyn Burnham in American Beauty, the narrators in Dixon's songs provide a facade of pleasantries, while turmoil churns beneath the shiny, happy surface.
--Akron Beacon Journal
Don Dixon is a smart, talented guy with a natural instinct for writing songs. His lyrics sneak up on you, packing an emotional wallop while avoiding the obvious. Whether you are a songwriter or simply an admirer of the art, you'll find gold in this collection.
--Larry Groce host of NPR’s Mountain Stage
These boys and girls fight for clarity, even when they know they can’t stand the truth. Don Dixon’s lyrics celebrate not so much the gin drink of love as the tonic of an honest heart.
-Jim Wann – composer, playwright, performer
Don Dixon is undeniably one of the most important men in the history of American alternative rock...great songwriting full of pathos, anger, and shame.
--CD Consumer
Singer-songwriters like Bob Dylan, Paul Simon and Neil Young have justified their reputations with consistently interesting records. But what about the guitars-and-bars journeymen who have managed to produce impressive bodies of work without becoming legends? Don Dixon, who has found modest fame as a producer for such acts as REM and the Smithereens, is also an underrated performer who possesses two emotive bass instruments (one vocal, the other stringed) and a songwriting talent for both the puckish and the poignant.
--The New Yorker
For the most part, rock and roll rhymes are meant to be sung and not read. I'm often disappointed, even embarrassed, to read printed lyrics. Don Dixon is an exception. His lyrics stand up on the page as folk-soul poetry, revealing a depth of emotional acuity and insight few others can match. Like all good Southern songpoets, he draws from feeling and memory. Among the ingredients: a touch of Smokey Robinson, a dash of Elvis Costello, a pinch of Dan Penn and a generous handful of all those writers and poets whose work Dixon actually studied while he was supposed to be earning his collegiate degree all those years ago. His words are as soulful and authoritative as that big, bearish voice he delivers them in.
